I got started with a book, specifically "Patchwork, Quilting, & Applique" published by Reader's Digest. [http://www.amazon.com/Patchwork-quilting-applique-Readers-Digest/dp/0895779714] There are a bunch of books like this, though this one is my favorite. They take you step by step through the process and explain the variety of techniques and gear you can use. What I like best are the easy diagrams and the great variety of quilting styles they describe from all over the world. I would be happy to discuss more over email or skype. You should definitely quilt--it is very satisfying!

This is absolutely Beautiful. I have been wanting to try quilting... should I just jump in & learn as I go? Any tips?
